Description

A Napoleon III period clock, circa 1855, remarkable for its generous dimensions and aesthetic balance. This piece immediately captivates with the exceptional quality of its craftsmanship, demonstrating the masterful expertise characteristic of the mid-19th century. Its state of preservation is particularly noteworthy, retaining all the finesse of its chasing and the richness of its patina. A rare and precious find, this clock bears the signatures of both the bronze caster and the clockmaker, both listed in the renowned Tardy dictionary of clockmakers for the period 1850-1860, a guarantee of authenticity and quality.

The patinated bronze sculpture depicts an elegant naiad pouring water, reclining gracefully in a pose that is both natural and poetic. Her delicately modeled body rests supplely, while her arm flows gracefully over an amphora from which an imaginary spring seems to flow. The treatment of the face is exquisitely delicate: soft features, a downcast gaze imbued with melancholy and an almost contemplative serenity. The finely crafted hair, adorned with naturalistic details, accentuates the overall harmony of the composition. The whole evokes a bucolic and mythological world, where the female figure embodies both grace and the movement of water. The depicted female figure belongs to the iconographic tradition of the naiads, those freshwater nymphs from Greco-Roman mythology, guardians of springs, rivers, and fountains. Here, the artist has captured with great sensitivity the very essence of this mythological figure: an embodiment of water that is at once vibrant, fluid, and soothing. The naiad, reclining in a supple and surrendered posture, seems to be engaged in a silent dialogue with the element she represents, her gesture naturally accompanying the movement of the water flowing from the amphora. Her gentle and restrained demeanor conveys a sense of inner reverie, almost meditative. Her slanted gaze and half-closed eyelids suggest a discreet presence, as if absorbed by the murmur of the spring. This poetic dimension is enhanced by the exquisite modeling, where each curve of the body is rendered with delicacy and restraint, in a perfect balance between realism and idealization.

The gilt-bronze base is distinguished by its richly structured architecture and highly virtuosic ornamentation. The foliage, floral, and scroll motifs intertwine elegantly, revealing remarkably precise chasing and brilliant gilding. The surface finish subtly alternates between matte and glossy, highlighting every detail. The perfectly preserved, domed white enamel dial offers refined legibility with its delicately executed numerals and inscriptions, complemented by finely openworked gilt-bronze hands whose design underscores the overall refinement.

En conclusion, cette pendule constitue une œuvre d’exception, tant par la qualité de sa sculpture que par la richesse de sa monture. Elle réunit avec harmonie art, technique et histoire, faisant d’elle une pièce rare et précieuse.

Our items mainly stem from the inheritance of objects, preciously looked after over numerous generations. There is a stringent selection process for each object ensuring perfect authenticity and the optimal amount of gilding

We do not use the term “Restoration”, which implies a significant transformation or major repair that modifies an object’s authenticity or original appearance. Each object is completely dismantled, then thoroughly cleaned part by part; our cleaning technique restores shine without adversely affecting the gold. We then put the clock back together, returning all the various parts to their origin location, as well as all the nuts and screws. Subsequently, the item is inspected to ensure it is perfectly even, symmetrical, and smooth, etc.

The clock’s movement undergoes a complete overhaul; it is totally dismantled, cleaned and each individual part is polished. The duration of this procedure affects the shine: we prefer to obtain a brilliant shine, in keeping with the gilding of the object. To increase the strength and quality of the gears, we apply a very important procedure, known as bouchonnage, to correct for wear accumulated over years of operation, consisting in the placing cork of stoppers in any pivot holes that have become deformed by wear. After the clock has been completely reassembled, it is tested over a long period of time to ensure that the movement, as well as the hour and half-hour strikes, are operating correctly.
