Clock – Allegory of Day and Night

This monumental mantel clock, exceptional in its imposing scale and the richness of its composition, constitutes a remarkable example of French decorative horology from the Restoration period, circa 1820. Executed in finely chased bronze and mercury-gilt with gold, it is distinguished by the impressive scale of its two sculpted figures, the remarkable quality of their modelling, and above all by the excellent state of preservation of its original gilding, which remains particularly luminous and even. The quality of execution, both in the modelling of the figures and in the delicacy of the ornamental details, is indicative of a first-rate Parisian workshop. The authenticity of the ensemble is further supported by the two clockmakers’ signatures associated with the piece: Pons, a manufacture and clockmaker whose movements were used in numerous high-quality clocks during the early 19th century, and Gérard à Paris, whose signature appears on the dial. Gérard was a Parisian clockmaker established on rue du Coq-Saint-Honoré and is recorded in specialist reference works, notably Tardy’s dictionary of French clockmakers. Gérard is documented at this address during the first decades of the 19th century, which corresponds perfectly with the stylistic dating of this exceptional clock.

The composition presents an elegant allegory of Day and Night, represented by two antique-inspired figures seated side by side upon a rocky mound. The male figure, depicted in a noble and serene attitude, with his torso exposed and his gaze slightly turned away, holds a long flaming torch in one hand, an attribute evocative of light and Day. His relaxed posture, extended leg and the natural movement of his drapery lend the figure considerable elegance and a genuine sense of movement. Beside him, the female figure adopts a more languid and intimate pose: she gently inclines her head upon her companion’s shoulder, while one arm rests gracefully behind her head. Her peaceful expression, almost closed eyes and relaxed posture evoke rest, sleep and the transition into Night. The crescent moon placed in her hair reinforces this symbolic interpretation. The two figures are set upon a naturalistic setting richly adorned with flowers and foliage, while the dial bezel itself is surrounded by an elaborate celestial repertory composed of stars and zodiac signs, establishing a direct connection with the cycle of time, the movement of the heavenly bodies and the perpetual alternation of Day and Night. Conceived as a true three-dimensional sculpture, the scene is particularly spectacular in its interplay of bodies, draperies, gestures and gazes.

The ensemble rests upon an imposing architectural gilt-bronze base, composed of several moulded tiers and enhanced by friezes of classical ornament. The front is centred by a spectacular trophy dedicated to the arts and music, comprising a lyre, stringed and wind instruments, a quiver, arrows, foliage and ribbons, arranged in a highly refined symmetrical composition. The circular white enamel dial, with black Roman numerals, is fitted with slender gilt-bronze hands and bears the signature “GÉRARD A PARIS”. Its broad finely chased gilt-bronze bezel is punctuated by stars and zodiacal figures, complemented by vegetal motifs and symbolic ornaments. The whole is supported by four architectural feet adorned with large acanthus leaves, while the mouldings, friezes and vegetal ornaments create a remarkable decorative continuity between the base and the sculptural composition above.

Through its monumental presence, particularly appealing iconography and exceptional richness of decoration, this Orpheus clock stands as a work of outstanding quality within the art of gilt bronze during the Restoration period. The perfect coherence of its composition, the elegance of the mythological figure, the profusion of its musical and floral attributes, together with the remarkable quality of the chasing, make it a particularly sought-after work of art. Its subject, directly inspired by Antiquity and treated with all the Neoclassical sensibility characteristic of creations dating from around 1820, lends it a timeless beauty and considerable decorative appeal. The remarkable preservation of its gilt bronzes and the integrity of its ornamental programme further enhance its significance. Rare for its scale, subject matter and richness of execution, this clock is therefore an exceptional work, destined to take its place equally well in a collection of antique gilt bronzes or in an interior seeking a spectacular, refined and deeply representative expression of French Restoration taste.
