Description

A Restoration period portico clock in mercury-gilt bronze and patinated bronze, resting on a monumental architectural structure inspired by Antiquity. The whole adopts an architectural composition in the form of a small temple, structured by four cylindrical columns in dark brown patinated bronze, arranged in a portico and resting on finely chased gilt bronze square bases. The richly ornamented Corinthian-inspired capitals feature a profusion of acanthus leaves and volutes, supporting a projecting entablature treated like a classical cornice.

The upper section consists of a rectangular entablature surmounted by a massive plinth. The frieze is enlivened by an applied decoration of scalloped garlands held by floral rosettes in relief. The cornice, particularly elaborate, is enriched with successive moldings and a row of finely chiseled dentils, reminiscent of the orders of classical architecture and lending the clock a solemn and balanced character.

At the center of the composition, suspended between the columns, is the circular white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, encircled by a gilt-bronze bezel decorated with pearls and stylized leaves. The openworked blued-steel hands indicate the hours and minutes. The dial has two openings for winding the movement. Below it appears a decorative element in the form of a stylized lyre, also in gilt bronze, which supports an exposed pendulum richly adorned with a large circular medallion chased with scrolls, palmettes, and floral motifs.

The architectural base echoes the contrast between patinated and gilt bronze. The front of the clock is decorated with a large openwork motif of symmetrical scrolls and intertwined foliage, centered by a laurel wreath. The lower plinth is embellished with a continuous frieze of palmettes and rests on four small rectangular feet adorned with raised plant motifs.

The clock is distinguished by the quality of its chasing and the elegant contrast between the dark patina of the architectural elements and the gleam of the gilt bronze, characteristic of portico clocks from the first third of the 19th century.

The mechanism bears the stamp of the clockmaker PONS and is dated 1827. PONS is listed in Tardy's Dictionary of Clockmakers. This high-quality movement confirms the French origin of this clock and its place among the refined production of the Restoration period.

Original mechanism intact, unaltered, with a wire suspension. The hour and half-hour strikes are played on an antique bell with a clear and authentic sound.

Our items mainly stem from the inheritance of objects, preciously looked after over numerous generations. There is a stringent selection process for each object ensuring perfect authenticity and the optimal amount of gilding

We do not use the term “Restoration”, which implies a significant transformation or major repair that modifies an object’s authenticity or original appearance. Each object is completely dismantled, then thoroughly cleaned part by part; our cleaning technique restores shine without adversely affecting the gold. We then put the clock back together, returning all the various parts to their origin location, as well as all the nuts and screws. Subsequently, the item is inspected to ensure it is perfectly even, symmetrical, and smooth, etc.

The clock’s movement undergoes a complete overhaul; it is totally dismantled, cleaned and each individual part is polished. The duration of this procedure affects the shine: we prefer to obtain a brilliant shine, in keeping with the gilding of the object. To increase the strength and quality of the gears, we apply a very important procedure, known as bouchonnage, to correct for wear accumulated over years of operation, consisting in the placing cork of stoppers in any pivot holes that have become deformed by wear. After the clock has been completely reassembled, it is tested over a long period of time to ensure that the movement, as well as the hour and half-hour strikes, are operating correctly.
