Description

A Louis XV style cartel clock, made during the Napoleon III era around 1850, features a dynamic and elegantly curved silhouette, characteristic of the Rococo style revived in the 19th century. The overall design adopts a highly dynamic, violin-like form, resting on a generously projecting base with sinuous contours. The clock's body rises in successive projections, with curved sides that follow the movement of the case and create an impression of suppleness and vertical thrust. The upper section is crowned with a richly carved finial forming a foliate and floral bouquet, which extends the undulating line of the cornice and underscores the decorative inspiration of the Louis XV style.

The case is entirely veneered with blond and brown horn, whose shimmering hues create a decorative background of great depth. The veneer displays a cloudy and contrasting grain, ranging from amber to mahogany brown, producing an almost marbled effect that enlivens the entire surface. The quality and, above all, the preservation of this horn veneer are particularly remarkable and relatively rare. It has been finished with a French polish that highlights its natural richness, providing both protection and shine, as well as enhanced contrast between the different tones of the material.

The whole is accentuated and structured by abundant, finely chased gilt bronze mounts. These mounts follow the lines of the case and emphasize its movement: foliate clasps, scrolls, volutes, and vegetal cascades rhythmically punctuate the uprights and crossbars. The sides are framed by wide gilt bronze consoles, sculpted with stylized acanthus leaves that rise towards the dial. The broadly curved base is adorned with rocaille cartouches and foliate motifs in relief, while the corners are emphasized by powerful scrolls resting on small, rounded supports. The richly gilt bronze mounts provide a luminous contrast with the warm depth of the horn veneer.

The circular dial is protected by a domed glass and surrounded by a finely molded gilt-bronze bezel. It is distinguished by an elegant decoration composed of twenty-five enamel cartouches: twelve main cartouches with Roman numerals for the hours, alternating with auxiliary cartouches indicating the minutes at five-minute intervals. These enameled reserves, with a white background and black numerals, are set within an openwork and chased plaque, adorned with small gilt floral motifs that further enhance the overall decorative appeal. At the center, finely cut, openwork hands complete the composition.

With its dynamic architecture, the abundance of its rocaille bronze mounts, and the singular beauty of its perfectly preserved horn veneer, this wall clock elegantly illustrates the Second Empire's historicist taste for 18th-century forms. The combination of precious materials, the richness of the decoration, and the excellent preservation of its surfaces give this wall clock a particularly refined decorative presence.

Original mechanism intact, without modification. The hours and half-hours are struck on a gong, with a clear and authentic sound.

Our items mainly stem from the inheritance of objects, preciously looked after over numerous generations. There is a stringent selection process for each object ensuring perfect authenticity and the optimal amount of gilding

We do not use the term “Restoration”, which implies a significant transformation or major repair that modifies an object’s authenticity or original appearance. Each object is completely dismantled, then thoroughly cleaned part by part; our cleaning technique restores shine without adversely affecting the gold. We then put the clock back together, returning all the various parts to their origin location, as well as all the nuts and screws. Subsequently, the item is inspected to ensure it is perfectly even, symmetrical, and smooth, etc.

The clock’s movement undergoes a complete overhaul; it is totally dismantled, cleaned and each individual part is polished. The duration of this procedure affects the shine: we prefer to obtain a brilliant shine, in keeping with the gilding of the object. To increase the strength and quality of the gears, we apply a very important procedure, known as bouchonnage, to correct for wear accumulated over years of operation, consisting in the placing cork of stoppers in any pivot holes that have become deformed by wear. After the clock has been completely reassembled, it is tested over a long period of time to ensure that the movement, as well as the hour and half-hour strikes, are operating correctly.
