Description
A large Empire period clock, signed on the dial "Chles Terrien à Paris," for Charles Terrien, a French clockmaker listed in Tardy's Dictionary of Clockmakers, dated 1815, on the rue des Rosiers. On the back of the dial is the enameller's signature and a serial number "Dub" 3524, for Duboisson, active during the Empire period and also listed in Tardy.
A monumental gilt bronze façade, remarkably well-preserved. An imposing sculpture depicts a young genius, his wings spread, his musculature ideal, his torso bare, draped in classical style. With one hand, he touches a lyre (resting on the base), the quintessential instrument of Antiquity: music, poetry, harmony. Two books on the floor add a studious note: knowledge passed down, study, memory. On the other side, he holds a laurel wreath, his arm resting on the clockwork mechanism, as if guarding and celebrating time.
The clock face is adorned with an openwork sphere of stars, one of the most striking decorative elements, a symbol of the celestial vault and astronomy. A large, domed dial of white enamel is highlighted by a finely chased border of palmettes. The dial is framed by knotted wreaths and, below, by a bas-relief of the arts, depicting an elegant female figure contemplating a tablet.
The clock rests on a wide rectangular base, its plinth with projecting edges and chased with a frieze of heart-shaped motifs. The front of the base features a large bas-relief frieze, its central figure representing Fame as a boundary between commerce and war, framed by two imposing, finely chiseled, and richly ornamented cartouches: a ship, anchor, globe, cornucopia, globe—helmet, sword, spear, shield, arrows, coat of arms, and axe.
Original mechanism, unmodified; wire suspension; striking the hours and half-hours on an antique bell.

Our items mainly stem from the inheritance of objects, preciously looked after over numerous generations. There is a stringent selection process for each object ensuring perfect authenticity and the optimal amount of gilding
We do not use the term “Restoration”, which implies a significant transformation or major repair that modifies an object’s authenticity or original appearance. Each object is completely dismantled, then thoroughly cleaned part by part; our cleaning technique restores shine without adversely affecting the gold. We then put the clock back together, returning all the various parts to their origin location, as well as all the nuts and screws. Subsequently, the item is inspected to ensure it is perfectly even, symmetrical, and smooth, etc.
The clock’s movement undergoes a complete overhaul; it is totally dismantled, cleaned and each individual part is polished. The duration of this procedure affects the shine: we prefer to obtain a brilliant shine, in keeping with the gilding of the object. To increase the strength and quality of the gears, we apply a very important procedure, known as bouchonnage, to correct for wear accumulated over years of operation, consisting in the placing cork of stoppers in any pivot holes that have become deformed by wear. After the clock has been completely reassembled, it is tested over a long period of time to ensure that the movement, as well as the hour and half-hour strikes, are operating correctly.
