Description

This remarkable chariot clock, dating from the early 20th century, captivates with its imposing sculptural composition, theatrical movement and richly detailed decoration. The ensemble combines a patinated spelter sculpture in deep, nuanced tones, subtly enhanced with bronze and golden-brown highlights, with a substantial griotte red marble base, whose contrasting veining emphasises the precious character of the piece. The scene majestically depicts a female figure seated in a chariot of animated forms, evoking a vast shell carried upon clouds and decorative scrolls. The identity of this clock lies in its original composition, inspired by mythological imagery and the taste for grand allegorical subjects. Its movement bears the stamp of the clockmaking firm Société Clusienne S.C.A.P.H., Cluses, attesting to its horological provenance.

The composition unfolds through a succession of sculpted volumes, executed with a remarkable sense of movement. At the summit, an antique-style female figure, dressed in an exquisitely draped tunic, sits upon the chariot. Her face, turned towards the sky, conveys a serene and resolute expression, while her flowing hair, gathered at the back, delicately frames her features. The supple folds of her garment follow the contours of her body and accompany the movement of the scene. In her hand, she holds the twisted reins connecting her to the team, reinforcing the impression of guidance and forward motion. The chariot features a sculpted body with sinuous contours, adorned with sweeping scrolls, foliage and raised motifs evoking a monumental shell emerging from stylised clouds. At its centre is a circular white enamel dial, decorated with Arabic numerals, a delicate polychrome floral garland and slender gilt hands. Its gilded brass surround contrasts elegantly with the darker tones of the sculpture. At the base of the composition, two powerful lions advance side by side, forming a majestic team. Their muscular bodies, firmly planted paws and thick, finely detailed manes convey the full strength of these symbolic animals. Their slightly open jaws, expressive gazes and dynamic postures lend the ensemble a striking presence. Harnesses richly embellished with decorative motifs complete their trappings. The entire composition rests upon a substantial rectangular base of griotte red marble, featuring particularly decorative red, brown and white veining, adorned at the front with a gilt-bronze ornamental mount and supported by small, finely crafted feet.

Original mechanism, unmodified. Strikes the hours and half-hours on an antique bell, with a clear and authentic sound.

Our items mainly stem from the inheritance of objects, preciously looked after over numerous generations. There is a stringent selection process for each object ensuring perfect authenticity and the optimal amount of gilding

We do not use the term “Restoration”, which implies a significant transformation or major repair that modifies an object’s authenticity or original appearance. Each object is completely dismantled, then thoroughly cleaned part by part; our cleaning technique restores shine without adversely affecting the gold. We then put the clock back together, returning all the various parts to their origin location, as well as all the nuts and screws. Subsequently, the item is inspected to ensure it is perfectly even, symmetrical, and smooth, etc.

The clock’s movement undergoes a complete overhaul; it is totally dismantled, cleaned and each individual part is polished. The duration of this procedure affects the shine: we prefer to obtain a brilliant shine, in keeping with the gilding of the object. To increase the strength and quality of the gears, we apply a very important procedure, known as bouchonnage, to correct for wear accumulated over years of operation, consisting in the placing cork of stoppers in any pivot holes that have become deformed by wear. After the clock has been completely reassembled, it is tested over a long period of time to ensure that the movement, as well as the hour and half-hour strikes, are operating correctly.
