Description

This remarkable Régence-style cartel clock, inspired by the sumptuous aesthetic of the reign of Louis XIV, was crafted during the Second Empire, circa 1860. It captivates with the richness of its composition, the elegance of its architectural design and the sumptuous contrast of its materials. The case is adorned with precious Boulle-style marquetry, combining gilt brass with red-dyed tortoiseshell, whose deep hues are enhanced by a hand-applied French polish that lends protection, depth and brilliance to the entire piece. Richly detailed, finely chased and gilded bronze mounts accentuate the architectural lines of the case and endow this clock with a particularly prestigious decorative presence. The movement bears the stamp “Monteil à Toulouse”, the signature of a clockmaker listed in Tardy’s *Dictionnaire des horlogers français*.

The composition is distinguished by its remarkable balance between architectural rigour and ornamental profusion. The upper section, with its flared, curving silhouette, is crowned by an elegant gilt-bronze ornament and accentuated by moulded friezes decorated with scrolls, palmettes and stylised foliage. The marquetry panels display sumptuous symmetrical foliate scrolls, arabesques and botanical motifs, executed in brass against a red and black tortoiseshell ground. The circular dial, framed by a beaded gilt-bronze border, features white enamel cartouches bearing blue Roman numerals, arranged around a richly chased central section decorated with floral motifs. On either side, scrolling bronze foliage harmoniously complements its shape. Beneath the dial, a glazed aperture reveals a deep black interior, highlighting a spectacular gilt-bronze mount depicting a female mascaron surrounded by scrolling foliage and shells. In the background, a pendulum adorned with a radiant sun is visible through this opening, adding further visual animation to the composition. The lower section, with its sinuous contours, is embellished with further arrangements of scrollwork, shells and foliage, while the curved gilt-bronze feet elegantly complete this dynamic silhouette.

Through the quality of its marquetry, the richness of its gilding and the remarkable coherence of its decoration, this clock offers an appealing testament to the Second Empire’s historicist fascination with the great decorative creations of the Ancien Régime. The preciousness of the tortoiseshell, the chromatic contrasts of the Boulle marquetry and the lustre of the gilt bronze create an ensemble of great distinction, in which every detail contributes to its noble appearance. The movement’s stamp provides a valuable element of identification, while the spectacular architecture and abundant ornamentation ensure a striking presence in a classical interior, a distinguished residence or a collection of decorative arts. A collectible clock of pronounced historical character, combining horological craftsmanship, ornamental virtuosity and timeless elegance.

Original mechanism, unmodified. Strikes the hours and half-hours on an antique bell, with a clear and authentic sound.

Our items mainly stem from the inheritance of objects, preciously looked after over numerous generations. There is a stringent selection process for each object ensuring perfect authenticity and the optimal amount of gilding

We do not use the term “Restoration”, which implies a significant transformation or major repair that modifies an object’s authenticity or original appearance. Each object is completely dismantled, then thoroughly cleaned part by part; our cleaning technique restores shine without adversely affecting the gold. We then put the clock back together, returning all the various parts to their origin location, as well as all the nuts and screws. Subsequently, the item is inspected to ensure it is perfectly even, symmetrical, and smooth, etc.

The clock’s movement undergoes a complete overhaul; it is totally dismantled, cleaned and each individual part is polished. The duration of this procedure affects the shine: we prefer to obtain a brilliant shine, in keeping with the gilding of the object. To increase the strength and quality of the gears, we apply a very important procedure, known as bouchonnage, to correct for wear accumulated over years of operation, consisting in the placing cork of stoppers in any pivot holes that have become deformed by wear. After the clock has been completely reassembled, it is tested over a long period of time to ensure that the movement, as well as the hour and half-hour strikes, are operating correctly.
