Description
An exceptional pair of large Empire-style chandeliers, created during the Second Empire period around 1860, this spectacular ensemble reflects the refined taste of the 19th century for the grandeur and majesty of the Imperial decorative repertoire. Their particularly elegant architecture combines the luminous purity of superb white marble with sumptuous finely chased and gilded bronze ornamentation, creating a contrast of remarkable decorative richness. Through their imposing proportions, exceptional balance, and outstanding quality of execution, these chandeliers brilliantly embody the splendour and refinement of the decorative arts of the Napoleon III period.
Each chandelier features six gracefully arranged branches of light radiating harmoniously around a central stem, terminating in richly decorated circular candle cups adorned with gadrooning and stylised motifs. The upper section is organised around an elegant architectural bouquet dominated by a central vase, while the sweeping arms form graceful scrolls enriched with foliage and palmettes. Four imposing eagle heads, among the principal emblems of the Imperial vocabulary, surround the central stem and lend the ensemble a particularly majestic presence. The fluted central column rises from a finely sculpted decoration of acanthus leaves and drapery before joining a tall cylindrical shaft of white marble. The composition is completed by a solid square marble base supported by four richly ornamented gilt-bronze feet, further enhancing the monumentality and perfect harmony of the design.
An authentic and spectacular work of the Second Empire, this pair of chandeliers captivates through its exceptional decorative presence and the remarkable quality of its chasing. The richness of its Empire repertoire—combining eagles, palmettes, foliage, drapery and elegant scrollwork—makes it a particularly accomplished testament to the craftsmanship of 19th-century French bronzeworkers. With their impressive scale, architectural silhouette, and the warm brilliance of their gilding contrasting with the noble purity of white marble, these chandeliers constitute a rare and prestigious decorative masterpiece, ideally suited to enhancing an interior of exceptional distinction.

Our items mainly stem from the inheritance of objects, preciously looked after over numerous generations. There is a stringent selection process for each object ensuring perfect authenticity and the optimal amount of gilding
We do not use the term “Restoration”, which implies a significant transformation or major repair that modifies an object’s authenticity or original appearance. Each object is completely dismantled, then thoroughly cleaned part by part; our cleaning technique restores shine without adversely affecting the gold. We then put the clock back together, returning all the various parts to their origin location, as well as all the nuts and screws. Subsequently, the item is inspected to ensure it is perfectly even, symmetrical, and smooth, etc.
The clock’s movement undergoes a complete overhaul; it is totally dismantled, cleaned and each individual part is polished. The duration of this procedure affects the shine: we prefer to obtain a brilliant shine, in keeping with the gilding of the object. To increase the strength and quality of the gears, we apply a very important procedure, known as bouchonnage, to correct for wear accumulated over years of operation, consisting in the placing cork of stoppers in any pivot holes that have become deformed by wear. After the clock has been completely reassembled, it is tested over a long period of time to ensure that the movement, as well as the hour and half-hour strikes, are operating correctly.
