Description

Exceptional and extremely rare Charles X period vase-shaped clock, dating from circa 1830, distinguished by the elegance of its proportions, the richness of its crystal craftsmanship and the ingenuity of its design. This remarkable timepiece stands out for its complete authenticity and outstanding state of original preservation. It has undergone no alterations or modifications and retains all its original components, including its original pendulum, a precious testament to its historical integrity.

The vase, crafted from a single piece of solid crystal, displays exceptional cutting throughout its entire surface. Its principal decoration combines deeply cut diamond-point motifs, forming flattened pyramids, with delicate guilloché patterns on the flat surfaces. This precisely executed geometric cutting creates a fascinating interplay of reflections and light, enhancing the transparency and brilliance of the crystal. The composition rests upon an elegant, richly cut pedestal foot, terminating in a square base with architectural lines. The wide, gently flared upper opening accentuates the slender silhouette and harmonious balance of the entire piece.

One of the most remarkable features of this clock lies in the integration of its movement within the crystal itself. A specially designed opening in the body of the vase accommodates the dial and its mechanism, secured by an ingenious and distinctive mounting system. This construction preserves a substantial area of crystal at the rear of the vase, maintaining the transparency and aesthetic continuity of the piece. The assembly retains its original mercury fire-gilded bronze fixing knob, as well as its magnificent gilded dial and substantial, finely chiselled bronze bezel. The latter is richly decorated with water-leaf motifs, executed with exceptional finesse. The gilded dial, adorned with delicate radiating guilloché engraving, features Roman numerals and slender blued steel hands. The combination of luminous gilding and finely cut crystal creates a particularly refined contrast.

Mécanisme entièrement d’origine, suspension à fil de soie.

Our items mainly stem from the inheritance of objects, preciously looked after over numerous generations. There is a stringent selection process for each object ensuring perfect authenticity and the optimal amount of gilding

We do not use the term “Restoration”, which implies a significant transformation or major repair that modifies an object’s authenticity or original appearance. Each object is completely dismantled, then thoroughly cleaned part by part; our cleaning technique restores shine without adversely affecting the gold. We then put the clock back together, returning all the various parts to their origin location, as well as all the nuts and screws. Subsequently, the item is inspected to ensure it is perfectly even, symmetrical, and smooth, etc.

The clock’s movement undergoes a complete overhaul; it is totally dismantled, cleaned and each individual part is polished. The duration of this procedure affects the shine: we prefer to obtain a brilliant shine, in keeping with the gilding of the object. To increase the strength and quality of the gears, we apply a very important procedure, known as bouchonnage, to correct for wear accumulated over years of operation, consisting in the placing cork of stoppers in any pivot holes that have become deformed by wear. After the clock has been completely reassembled, it is tested over a long period of time to ensure that the movement, as well as the hour and half-hour strikes, are operating correctly.
