Description
This pair of finely chased and gilded bronze candelabra dates from the Napoleon III period, circa 1860. Resting on delicately beaded toupie feet and a molded circular base, each piece stands on a widened tripod base adorned with scrolling volutes terminating in small stylized acanthus leaves. Applied cartouches and panels, set against a light onyx hardstone background, depict trophies adorned with torches, palmettes, outstretched wings, and various lanceolate leaves, all highlighted by beaded borders, gadrooned moldings, and beaded friezes that harmoniously structure the whole.
Above this richly architectural base rises a composite central shaft reminiscent of an antique baluster. It begins with a flared foot embellished with scrolling foliage and swags, and extends into a gadrooned baluster-shaped vase encircled by a beaded molding. This supports a cylindrical drum of white onyx held between geometric mounts forming stepped handles, reminiscent of ancient amphorae and kraters. Sculptures of water leaves, veined foliate leaves, small rosettes, and lambrequins discreetly punctuate this area, reinforcing the verticality and nobility of the design.
The upper section unfolds a cluster of five lights, including four lateral arms and one apex light. The arms, forming broad, symmetrical, and contorted volutes, are carved with refined foliage and rhythmically accentuate the elevation with their beaded spherical nodes and fluted stems. Each arm holds a circular cup edged with pearls, surmounted by a gadrooned socket in the shape of a swollen chalice, adorned with vertical channels that taper towards the stem. The central light dominates the ensemble, crowned by a motif of military and sacred inspiration composed of small pyramidal arrows, teardrop-shaped pinnacles, and a ringed knot, reminiscent of spearheads, miniature obelisks, or the ornamentation of ancient temples. The whole is characterized by impeccable symmetry, a richness of controlled ornamentation, and great architectural rigor. The decoration blends acanthus leaves, palmettes, scrolls, water leaves, gadrooned motifs, fluting, pearls, egg-and-dart moldings, consoles, cartouches, and applied panels, all perfectly executed in exceptionally high-quality gilt bronze. The combination of the gilt metal with the white stone creates a noble and luminous contrast.

Our items mainly stem from the inheritance of objects, preciously looked after over numerous generations. There is a stringent selection process for each object ensuring perfect authenticity and the optimal amount of gilding
We do not use the term “Restoration”, which implies a significant transformation or major repair that modifies an object’s authenticity or original appearance. Each object is completely dismantled, then thoroughly cleaned part by part; our cleaning technique restores shine without adversely affecting the gold. We then put the clock back together, returning all the various parts to their origin location, as well as all the nuts and screws. Subsequently, the item is inspected to ensure it is perfectly even, symmetrical, and smooth, etc.
The clock’s movement undergoes a complete overhaul; it is totally dismantled, cleaned and each individual part is polished. The duration of this procedure affects the shine: we prefer to obtain a brilliant shine, in keeping with the gilding of the object. To increase the strength and quality of the gears, we apply a very important procedure, known as bouchonnage, to correct for wear accumulated over years of operation, consisting in the placing cork of stoppers in any pivot holes that have become deformed by wear. After the clock has been completely reassembled, it is tested over a long period of time to ensure that the movement, as well as the hour and half-hour strikes, are operating correctly.
