Of remarkable decorative elegance, this Napoléon III mantel clock, dating from circa 1860, is distinguished by the richness of its execution and the harmony of its composition. Crafted in finely gold-chased gilt bronze and enhanced with delicate blue-ground Paris porcelain plaques, it bears witness to the refined and particularly ornamental taste of the second half of the 19th century. The carefully executed movement bears the signature “Roblin à Paris”, attesting to the involvement of this Parisian clockmaker, listed in the renowned Tardy dictionary of French clockmakers. The combination of fine-quality horology, richly worked sculpture and painted porcelain gives this piece a particularly precious character.
The composition is centred around an elegant seated young woman, delicately holding a hand mirror from which a fine chain is suspended. This mirror is not merely a decorative element: it is fully functional and can actually be used as a mirror, adding a particularly original aesthetic and practical dimension to this sculptural composition. Her softly featured face, slightly lowered gaze and serene expression enhance the poetic character of the scene. Her long, wavy hair is rendered with great delicacy, while her ample gown, animated by soft and natural folds, harmoniously envelops her figure. Beside her stands the circular dial, framed by a rich beaded border and surmounted by a decoration of foliage, flowers and ribbons. The white enamel dial, with blue Roman numerals, retains its two winding apertures and finely crafted hands. The whole rests upon a lively Rocaille-style architectural structure composed of scrolls, volutes, foliage, mounts and vegetal motifs. The blue-ground porcelain plaques, adorned with bouquets and garlands of polychrome flowers, provide a particularly refined touch of colour and emphasise the sinuous lines of the case. The richly moulded base, animated by scrolling foliage and floral ornaments, elegantly completes this spectacular composition.

We do not use the term “Restoration”, which implies a significant transformation or major repair that modifies an object’s authenticity or original appearance. Each object is completely dismantled, then thoroughly cleaned part by part; our cleaning technique restores shine without adversely affecting the gold. We then put the clock back together, returning all the various parts to their origin location, as well as all the nuts and screws. Subsequently, the item is inspected to ensure it is perfectly even, symmetrical, and smooth, etc.
The clock’s movement undergoes a complete overhaul; it is totally dismantled, cleaned and each individual part is polished. The duration of this procedure affects the shine: we prefer to obtain a brilliant shine, in keeping with the gilding of the object. To increase the strength and quality of the gears, we apply a very important procedure, known as bouchonnage, to correct for wear accumulated over years of operation, consisting in the placing cork of stoppers in any pivot holes that have become deformed by wear. After the clock has been completely reassembled, it is tested over a long period of time to ensure that the movement, as well as the hour and half-hour strikes, are operating correctly.
