Cette pendule d’époque Napoléon III, réalisée vers 1860 et signée sur son cadran ainsi que sur son mécanisme par l’horloger Raingo Frères à Paris, horloger référencé dans le Tardy, dictionnaire des horloger français.
Elle illustre avec raffinement le goût historiciste et décoratif propre au Second Empire, période durant laquelle les modèles du XVIIIᵉ siècle sont réinterprétés avec une richesse ornementale et une virtuosité technique accrues.
It exquisitely illustrates the historicist and decorative taste characteristic of the Second Empire, a period during which 18th-century designs were reinterpreted with increased ornamental richness and technical virtuosity.Its rigorously symmetrical architecture rests on a rectangular base of onyx marble with milky and translucent tones, a material particularly prized under Napoleon III for its precious character and its ability to enhance the brilliance of gilt bronze. The central section is structured like a small classical building, raised on a molded base supported by finely chiseled toupie feet. The circular enamel dial, set within a beaded bezel that frames the domed glass protecting the dial, forms the visual focal point of the composition.
It is encased in a gilt-bronze mount adorned with vegetal friezes and rows of pearls. The blued Roman numerals and openwork hands contribute to the overall graphic elegance, while the watchmaker's signature affirms the Parisian origin and horological quality of the piece.The side ornamentation is dominated by long, foliate cascades forming veritable cornucopias, a symbolic motif inherited from Antiquity and frequently used in Neoclassical decor. These sculpted elements, seemingly overflowing with stylized leaves and fruit, evoke prosperity, fertility, and wealth—values particularly prized in 19th-century decorative language. We do not use the term “Restoration”, which implies a significant transformation or major repair that modifies an object’s authenticity or original appearance. Each object is completely dismantled, then thoroughly cleaned part by part; our cleaning technique restores shine without adversely affecting the gold. We then put the clock back together, returning all the various parts to their origin location, as well as all the nuts and screws. Subsequently, the item is inspected to ensure it is perfectly even, symmetrical, and smooth, etc.
The clock’s movement undergoes a complete overhaul; it is totally dismantled, cleaned and each individual part is polished. The duration of this procedure affects the shine: we prefer to obtain a brilliant shine, in keeping with the gilding of the object. To increase the strength and quality of the gears, we apply a very important procedure, known as bouchonnage, to correct for wear accumulated over years of operation, consisting in the placing cork of stoppers in any pivot holes that have become deformed by wear. After the clock has been completely reassembled, it is tested over a long period of time to ensure that the movement, as well as the hour and half-hour strikes, are operating correctly.
